NCAA Betting Odds: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Virginia Cavaliers
Wednesday, February 08, 2012
by Joe Rodriguez
No. 20 Virginia Cavaliers is the runaway leader in the ACC in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 51.4 points -- nearly nine fewer than the next closest competitor.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons ranks last in the category, letting teams score 70.7 points per game. The Demon Deacons are fighting to stay out of last place in the conference while the Cavaliers sit comfortably in fifth, ready to pick off the top four with their lockdown defense and the power game of fifth-year senior Mike Scott.
Virginia needs only to look back to last season for motivation, when a Wake Forest team winless in the conference knocked the Cavaliers off behind a stellar performance from C.J. Harris.

Justbet Sportsbook currently have the Cavaliers listed as 14½-point favorites versus the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons (11-12): The Demon Deacons might not resemble the NCAA Tournament teams of past seasons, but they have had Virginia's number. Wake Forest has taken six straight and eight of 10 in the series. Harris, who scored 15 points in the Jan. 29, 2011 meeting, leads the team in scoring and has averaged 18.8 points over the last four games, all losses. Harris' main scoring compliment, Travis McKie, has struggled over the four-game skid, averaging 9.3 points on 29.8 percent shooting.
Virginia Cavaliers (18-4): Everything begins on the defensive end for the Cavaliers, who not only lead the ACC but sit second nationally in scoring defense. Virginia likes to make teams play at its pace, then relies on Scott to score enough to get the win. Scott put up 16 points and 11 rebounds last time out but also committed seven turnovers as the Cavaliers had a three-game win streak end at Florida State. Virginia will get more chances to prove it belongs among the ACC's best, with a trip to No. 5 North Carolina scheduled for Saturday and homes games against the Seminoles and Tar Heels toward the end of the regular season.
1. Virginia is 11-1 at home this season.
2. The Cavaliers’ 18-4 record marks their best start since the 1982-83 season.
3. Harris has reached double figures in 22 straight games.
BASKETBALL PREDICTION: Cavaliers 68, Demon Deacons 49.
