MLB Baseball Lines: Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers - Max Scherzer

The Boston Red Sox are the hottest team in the American League right now. Maybe some rain in Michigan will cool them down.

The Detroit Tigers had a nice little winning streak of their own going when the sky opened up on Wednesday, taking away their shot at a fourth consecutive win. The Red Sox and the Tigers will attempt to fight through the thunderstorms when they open up a four-game set on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.

The Tigers have opened as 117-moneyline favorites on Bet Online Sportsbook’s Live MLB Baseball Odds.

Tigers RH Max Scherzer (6-1, 2.98 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Alfredo Aceves (1-0, 2.42 ERA)

Scherzer suffered his first loss of the season last Saturday, surrendering three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings at Pittsburgh. The 26-year-old righthander has dominated at times in 2011, surrendering two runs or less in seven of his 10 outings. Scherzer has been a tough-luck loser in both of his previous outings against Boston, dropping both despite posting a 2.84 ERA.

Slotted into one of the two spots vacated by the disabled John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka, Aceves made his first start of the season against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The right-handed swingman went five innings, allowing one run on three hits while stretching out to 86 pitches. Aceves has made six starts among his 71 career appearances, going 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA in the role.

After a pair of dramatic come-from-behind victories in the first two games of the series, Detroit jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday just to have rain come in the third inning and wash away the rest of the game. With that one wiped out of the record books, the Tigers will come into the series with the Red Sox riding a three-game winning streak. The surge comes on the heels of a five-game skid that included two losses to Boston at Fenway Park last week. Both games were one-run losses, with Detroit totaling three runs in the two-game series.

Boston crushed the team with the best record in the majors - the Cleveland Indians - 14-2 on Wednesday, pounding out 20 hits and taking two of three in the series. The Red Sox have won 10 of their last 12 games and are 16-7 this month to move within one-half game of first place in the AL East.

While most of the teams in baseball are dealing with depressed offenses, Boston has gotten it going up and down the lineup lately. Wednesday’s win marked the second time in the last six games that the Red Sox have put up at least 14 runs. Even Carl Crawford got into the act, going 4-for-4 and joining Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz with a home run in the contest. Lost in the offense was the six scoreless innings turned in by Jon Lester, who picked up his MLB-best seventh win.

Weather could be a factor in the series, with thunderstorms forecasted for the Detroit area for the opener on Thursday and rain staying in the area for Friday. The Tigers have been rained out twice in the last 11 days.
