The Week That Was: New York Mets

New York opened their week at home against division-rival Florida, and was able to squeak out a 6-5 victory in the opener. That would be it for the winning portion of the series. The Mets were beat 5-4 the next night and were crushed 11-4 in the finale. Jon Niese took the brunt of the blame in the final game, allowing seven runs in just 5 2/3 innings pitched.

The Mets stayed at home for a three-game weekend set against Houston. A strong performance by Mike Pelfrey paced New York to a 2-1 win in the opener. Houston responded in game two, winning 4-1. The Mets, however, were able to leave New York with at least one series win, beating the Astros 5-1 in the finale. R.A. Dickey pitched seven innings of one-run ball and hit a two-RBI single as well.

New York has looked less-than-stellar in the first two games of the series. Atlanta has won both games, outscoring the Mets 18-5 in the process.

The Week That Was: Atlanta Braves

Atlanta opened their past week with possibly their worst loss of the season. Up 10-1 at one point against Colorado, the Braves pitching staff imploded and allowed the Rockies to mount an incredible comeback. The Rockies would win the game 12-10 and sweep the Braves out of Denver.

A much needed off-day followed, but the bad baseball continued into Friday’s series opener against Florida; the Braves were smashed 7-1 by the Fish. But Atlanta was able to release their frustrations in the following game, crushing Florida 12-3. Martin Prado had five RBI’s in the rout. The Braves escaped with a series win after a 7-6 victory in the finale.

Atlanta has put up a nine-spot in each of their first two games against New York. They won the first game 9-3 and followed with a 9-2 victory yesterday.

MLB Betting Matchup:

Pelfrey is in the midst of one of the finer seasons of his career, going into September with a solid 13-7 record and 3.61 ERA. He is been particularly fantastic as of late, winning three of his last four starts, two of which went 7+ innings with zero runs allowed. Even his loss (7 IP, 3 ER) is considered a quality start. That type of pitching will be needed in order to improve his record. The Mets don’t seem keen on giving Pelfrey much run support; in four of his last five starts, the New York offense has scored only seven combined runs.

It’s been a strange stretch of the season for Tommy Hanson. He hasn’t recorded a win since July 3rd (going 0-5 in 10 starts since), but the lack of W’s has hardly been his fault. In eight of those ten starts Hanson allowed three runs or less, including a streak of five starts where the righty went 6+ innings and allowed one run or less. His most recent start (6 ER in 5 IP) was pretty ugly, but he pitched so well beforehand that it has to be seen as an aberration as opposed to a trend. Hanson too has been plagued with a lack of run support; it’s much more likely the Braves will break that trend in this game instead of New York.
